I would say to check out QTTabbar: my opinion it gives explore more feature that explorer should have in the first place. If that doesn't work for you I found a program, it more of an add-on in my opinion to explore.

I was in the same boat, I didn't like explore very much because their is just thing that are just too limited to do, I did go to Directory Opus: and I really like that because I could arrange thing my way and had it setup to fit my needs more better.
