I would say to check out QTTabbar: my opinion it gives explore more feature that explorer should have in the first place. If that doesn't work for you I found a program, it more of an add-on in my opinion to explore.
My Favorite feature is tab bars it really helps when I have to dig into the windows file system and find a folder that some down below. It still freezes and chokes, just not as often as newer applications, like XYplorer, Free Commander, etc. The only down side that I see is that you are learning about to use the program, and it does work with windows. It's hard to find a free or low cost alternative that is as quick, and stable, especially managing NTFS volumes on a remote NAS.

I could easily spend a full week getting everything to my liking. Price: 21-day free trial, 30 Pro license, 50 Ultimate License. If you want something with more style than Windows' default, then RX Explorer is an interesting option. XYplorer Pro Advanced File System Explorer targets everybody who is looking for a real alternative to Windows Explorer.
I was in the same boat, I didn't like explore very much because their is just thing that are just too limited to do, I did go to Directory Opus: and I really like that because I could arrange thing my way and had it setup to fit my needs more better.
